Regardless of which edition you choose, SuperCard will empower you to create professional quality custom applications, presentations, and multimedia rich projects in the quickest and easiest manner possible. Moreover, if you plan on distributing your projects commercially, the Developer Edition's Standalone Maker will create applications with your underlying scripts encrypted to prevent others from viewing your code. However if you would like to merge more than one stack into a multi-window project, or plan to work with many projects, you will find the Developer Edition's advanced editing environment invaluable in saving time constructing new projects (and moving content from one project to another). App Tamer does however have a very clear interface for managing applications. And, if you plan to use SuperCard from time to time to create software for your personal needs (or you just wish to convert and update HyperCard stacks for use with Mac OS X), you will find the Standard Edition to meet these needs well. Of course, at the heart of both editions is the SuperCard runtime and runtime editing environment. In fact, we offer two different collections of tools, to best suit your needs and budget. It is many different things to many different users. For Bronowski the Ascent of Man was the story of man's freedom-his gradual emancipation from nature. We may look up at the sky through the lenses of a scientific world-view, but the brain which receives the signals is an organism imprinted with several million years of evolutionary terrors: of animals, strange signs in the skies and the omnipresence of imminent death. As homo sapiens, we are the product not of one millennium, but of at least a thousand. Only this creature achieved language, and this gave him mastery of himself and nature. There were an unknown number of hominid competitors, which were gradually reduced to two and then-100,000 years ago-to one: homo sapiens. This released their hands to use tools, increasing their food production capacity, their brain size, their superiority over other ape and animal competitors. It began over 4m years ago with the emergence of hominid species in Africa-furry, ape-like creatures who began the human ascent, about 1m years later, by standing on their hindlegs. For Bronowski, the Ascent of Man was the story of human evolution. That great educator and scientist, Jacob Bronowski, made it the title of his famous BBC documentary. The Ascent of Man may be an idea we had better do without. What do you mean, Man? What about Woman? And which Man? Surely not the European conquerors? And Ascent? Surely you're not implying that western civilisation is superior to everything that's gone before? And so on. Modern political correctness has lodged a suspicion in our mind about the Ascent of Man. Do we still believe in the story of progress? It sits in the attic of our minds like a glorious Victorian antique, as magnificent as a stuffed moose head and just as useless. We now live in ironic, anti-heroic times. The narrative of human progress was understood to be both a material and a moral process not just changing our technologies, but altering our instincts-and for the better. The thinkers of the Enlightenment wanted to replace the Biblical account of time (Genesis, Creation, Fall, Redemption) with a myth which put Man, not God, at the centre of the story. Progress became a theme in European thought in about 1750. These are works of grand humanist affirmation they affirm an idea of human progress, of man becoming master of himself and the world around. The theme allows us to see the lineage which connects, say, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, Mahler's Second and Tippett's The Mask of Time. Prompted by these millennial and celestial conjunctions, the BBC is taking the Ascent of Man as the theme of the last Prom of this millennium. Come 31st December, most of the human race will be like children in the back seat of the family car, peeking over their parents' shoulders as all the nines on the speedo suddenly turn to zero and we find ourselves racing along the road of a new millennium. A time for still larger thoughts is looming. It was a moment for large thoughts-about how far we had come since our ancestors ran away in fear at the darkened sky, about how science has changed the way we feel about nature: panic turning into wonder or into that quintessential modern emotion, disenchantment. On 11th august, hundreds of millions of people, from the Caribbean to the Bay of Bengal, stared skywards to watch the sun go dark. It also makes the copies of standard movies. Sour pickles are the traditional alternative that use salt to kick off the fermentation process. Traditional sour pickles are raw after culturing, unlike vinegar-based cucumber pickles that are cooked during the canning process – this destroys the enzymes, beneficial bacteria and heat-sensitive vitamins. Most pickles sold at grocery stores are stored in vinegar, and are tasty but not fermented. Pickle juice is the liquid that your pickles are stored in. Apparently, it’s getting trendy too and can often be found at farmers’ markets and in health food stores sold as ‘gut shots’. There is also tremendous gut healing and immune benefits of pickle juice. (If the chops have their rind on, turn them on their side with tongs or a fork and hold the rind against the pan to fry for a few minutes, until it becomes crackling, but be careful of spitting fat.) Serve with your favourite condiments.Pickles are delicious and wonderfully healthy when fermented using a traditional method of lactic acid fermentation – but don’t toss out the pickle juice! The cloudy, herb-filled brine in pickle juice is great for sipping or adding to a variety of recipes to amp up the acidity and flavour. When you’re ready to cook, lift the chops from their brine, pat dry with a clean towel and cook the chops using your preferred method – I like to start them off in a heavy-based frying pan, sauteeing them over a medium heat on one side for five minutes, until they start to caramelise, then turning them and finishing them off with a few minutes under a hot grill. Place the chops in a tight-fitting tub, pour over any reserved pickle juice you have to hand, pop in the fridge and leave to marinate for at least three hours, and preferably overnight if the meat isn’t fully submerged, turn them occasionally to ensure even brining. Failing that, pour into a used jar to cool and set before putting in the food waste bin. It will keep in the fridge for at least a week, or in the freezer indefinitely. Once you’ve finished cooking, strain any fat that renders out of the chop, and save it for roasting and frying other meals. Choose thick, free-range chops with a good layer of fat (remember, that fat is where much of the flavour is), and score the rind and fat at 2cm intervals so the chop won’t curl up in the hot pan. Pork rind is often removed from chops and other cuts of pork, so try to find a good butcher who leaves it intact on as a matter of course, because, without it, there’s no crackling, which would be a crying shame. Ideally, you’d use enough pickle juice completely to submerge the chops, but even a small amount of brine will work wonders, imparting its salty, aromatic deliciousness into the meat, though you’ll need to turn the chops so they brine evenly. Pickle juice is brimming with flavour and salt, which is exactly what’s needed to make the most flavourful pork chop out there. Speaking of cocktails, to make a pickleback shot, simply mix 25ml each of pickle juice and bourbon or, for a pickle martini, shake three parts vodka and one part pickle juice over ice, then strain and serve with a slice of pickle on the side. You aren’t a bright-eyed young man looking for adventure, or even saving the world you’re a heartless mercenary who’s escorting a young woman to her death, just so what’s left of humanity can continue to huddle semi-safely in in their little shacks for a few more years. This pervasive sense of inevitable loss, as well as the feeling that humanity’s best days are already in the distant past, casts the actions and motivations of everyone involved in a unique light that keeps the story from feeling like the JRPGs it clearly borrows from. “In this world humankind scrapes by despite monsters of all kinds constantly hunting and killing them, and the only way to keep that threat somewhat at bay is to send an 18-year-old off to die. But I Am Setsuna betrays this well-worn trope in a number of interesting ways, not the least of which is the fact (revealed in the very beginning) that you are escorting Setsuna to her sacrificial death. Doomed From The StartWhat I was looking forward to, though, was finding out more about my traveling companions, whose tales are at a glance familiar: You are part of a group of adventurers whose main purpose is to help one special individual, the titular Setsuna, complete her journey to a far-off place. It works for what I Am Setsuna is - this certainly isn’t meant to be high fantasy - but I never felt a sense of anticipation of what might be waiting through the next cave entrance because I usually already knew. And while the piano is no doubt a versatile instrument, that it is literally the only one employed does limit the music’s range of expression a bit. The overworld is just an endless expanse of snowy fields dotted with rickety old towns made up of a mere handful of homes, all of which look like they were furnished out of the same catalogue. Play The other edge of that sword is a sort of monotony that detracts ever so slightly from the overall sense of adventure. The gorgeous, achingly sad all-piano soundtrack, the muted colors, and the relentless emptiness of the overworld all work in harmonious service to the themes of sacrifice, regret, and hope in the face of cyclical and unending conflict. This is a tragic tale of a fractured world filled with people who vainly struggle against a rising tide of danger, and nearly every creative choice properly reflects this. Yes, there are brief moments of levity, but nothing that qualifies as an attempt at comic relief, and the journey is all the better for it. Some balance issues come dangerously close to trivializing its otherwise enjoyable combat, but it ultimately pulls through on the strength of its well-established tone and a well-told story.I Am Setsuna’s greatest strength, by far, is its steadfast commitment to the somber tone it establishes right from the outset. But instead of shamelessly aping those games, I Am Setsuna felt more like its own game the further I got into its deep magic and skills system, and the more I got to know its cast of intriguing characters. Even if I am Setsuna hadn't been sold to the public as a salve for Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 6 fans pining for the golden age of the JRPG, its many similarities to those two classics would invite comparison. It is the audio equivalent of FPS, or frames per second in the video world.Audio Overload is a video game music player that supports 33 video game music formats. The sample rate is the number of times that audio is captured every second. lower latency) when live recording, I will drop the buffer size to 512 samples or lower. If you are the kind that will jam out on the keyboard, then you need low latency.īased on my own workflow and CPU specs, I find that a buffer size of 1024 samples works well for me. If you work mostly with samples, then a high latency might not be an issue. This will be highly dependent on your way of writing music. You might want to start at 1024 samples and see if the latency is not too big for you. The best way to go about this is trial and error. Setting The Right Buffer LengthĪs explained above, setting the right buffer size is the first step to lighten your CPU load. This is why a lot of CPU-saving tips are applicable to most (if not all) DAWs. 5 Tips to Save Your CPU (for any DAW)Īlthough producers love to praise their favorite DAW versus another, the inner workings of most DAWs are quite similar. But if you are listening back to a track with 50 plugins working at the same time, you want the sound to come through seamlessly (lower CPU usage).īecause many producers run into CPU issues, we will be focusing on optimizing for CPU usage rather than latency in the rest of this guide. If you are recording, you need to hear what you are playing in real-time (lower latency). So one question to ask yourself is: are you optimizing for live performance or stability? Higher Buffer Size = More Latency = Less CPU Usage Lower Buffer Size = Less Latency = More CPU Usage This means there is a tradeoff to make between CPU load and latency. Note here the inverse correlation between buffer size and latency. Need a more visual explanation? Check out this video: Think of a website taking too long to load, an email not going through, or a game freezing and then moving again. In networks, latency refers to the time it takes for a request to go from the source to the destination. Latency is the time it takes for data to move from one point to another. So before diving any further, let’s clarify some terminology that will be used throughout this guide. And we all know the link between workflow and creativity. However, working with hardware and software also requires a basic understanding of technology.Īnd although buffer sizes and sample rates are not the most exciting topics, they are crucial to ensuring a smooth workflow. 5 Tips to Save Your CPU in Ableton LiveĪs electronic music producers, we generally think of ourselves as artists.Close Any Other Programs and Computer Functions. |
